In the early 60's, many on campus felt a strong need for a place where students could go to focus on cultural experiences outside of the classroom, a comfortable setting for integrating academic learning, perhaps, with the world at large. Also, it could provide a venue for art, music and literature in the daily lives of students, becoming a force aiding in their cultural development.
